Day 7: Destruction - Joywave

Song: Destruction
Artist: Joywave
Jan 7

Currently, I am feeling a kind of funky upbeat annoyance. I'm not in a bad mood by any means there is just an underlying aggravation that I would equate to a "don't rain on my parade" vibe. Essentially my mood is one giant oxymoron that I have dubbed: "Frolicking with an urge to punch negativity in the tooth".

What can I say about Joywave? They are an American Indie band of adorkable goobers who will eventually lose to an Mp3 player's solo career. See Destruction MV for more info, you're welcome.

Right off the bat "Destruction" sets the tone with a John Waters esque sound bite and an aggressive distorted keyboard (I am assuming). Our keyboard is then joined by a 70s funk drumbeat, catchy whistling, and pulsing bass.  Dan's vocals are whimsical and a touch chaotic that feel like being lost in daze within a crowd. This feeling is only heightened with the addition of an almost tunnel like effect as the only sound joining our vocal is the continuous bass. "Destruction" is a song that refuses to conform musically and just exudes quirky playfulness. Personally, the addition of a cowbell near the song's descent is the highlight. Instantly I am entertaining the thought of Christopher Walken in the studio with this band of hipsters demanding more cowbell. I love the vocal here as well, which for whatever reason makes me picture a cartoon T-Rex tiptoeing behind a lone tree.

Despite the fun nature of the song the lyrics are rather deep and in my opinion kind of anarchistic in nature.

"Oh my God, there's nobody who can set me right
I've been sent to torch the palace down in broad daylight"

The next set of lyrics can be interpreted any number of ways. I enjoy the notion that it is a commentary on the digital age and the kind of cyber comment wars that occur via social media.

"Creeping 'round, I saw a little thing I didn't like
You tried to hide
I've been creeping 'round, I saw a little thing I didn't like
You tried to hide from me"

The trying to hide could entail blocking someone. And the phrase "little thing I didn't like",  how often have we grabbed our popcorn to read through a giant thread of people arguing back and forth over something as menial as blue or white. If you have no idea what I am referring to consider yourself incredibly lucky and also potentially Ron Swanson.

Lyric that attacked me:
"Oh my God, I'm a giant with an appetite
Pushing people to the ground and running 'round the halls at night"

Song Color: Medium Brown floral pattern

Mood: Mess
