Ever since I could remember I have always loved the music in film and television. My shelves growing up were an odd mix of a wide range of Soundtracks, angsty Alternative Rock, and Backstreet Boys (no shame). Coming from an instrumental background, I found myself drawn to these larger than life symphonic compositions that instantly transported your mind to a different world. The most bizarre thing is that I find instrumental OSTs, especially, to be highly underrated and almost looked down upon in modern music; almost as if they have been stigmatized as something only weirdos listen to (not that I ever cared as I blared "The Treason of Isengard" on my way to high school). Thankfully things seem to be on the upward swing with the influx of symphonic concert events à la Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) and John Williams (literally everything).
"Yuri on ICE" is a track from the 2016 anime of the same name centered around the world of competitive figure skating. A true masterpiece in animation, I highly recommend a watch.
A lone piano begins the track with a flurry of sixteenth notes reminiscent of a butterfly fluttering in a lush and vibrant garden. The build as we add strings and drums is dramatic and high in energy. The drumbeat specifically feels like a heartbeat pulsing with anticipation, steady yet exciting. My absolute favorite moment of the song is the abrupt absence of the drums and strings as we go back to the flurry of the lone piano, now much softer. The sudden change in dynamic is so raw and emotional; like taking a deep breath before taking the plunge. As we build a second time there is a feeling of confidence in place of the almost anxious anticipation heard before. The final chord rings out resonating a euphoric serenity that feels like floating.
Being an entirely instrumental piece there aren't lyrics to interpret, however, given the context of the show the audience can relate the music as the sound of Katsuki Yuri's journey. His determination to start over and rekindle his passion for the sport that he loved after he reached his lowest point. The growth as he pushes his boundaries and branches out of his comfort zone into uncharted waters until he finally finds himself. Taro Umebayashi masterfully fills the audience with Yuri's heart, soul, and emotions as he performs his swan song.
Lyric that attacked me:
N/A
Song Color: Pale blue and swirling white
Mood: Euphoric
