Day 35: Very Good - Block B

Song: Very Good (Rough Version)
Artist: Block B
Feb 4

Maybe it's the exhaustion but my annoyance over such tiny inconsequential things has made me incredibly snappy and birthed an eye twitch that refuses to quit. I have a feeling that I am also coming down with something as my limbs continue to feel as though lead is coursing through my veins. All in all that is doing nothing to help the shortness of my mood.

Block B is a seven member group who debuted in 2011. The future is unclear of the group at this point with Zico (the leader's) choice to not renew his contract with label Seven Seasons. The other six have resigned, most likely to form subunits or solo activities, while member Jaehyo is now serving his mandatory two year military service.

For whatever reason "Very Good" begins with Zico (I think it's Zico) yelling food fight. Suddenly, I am flashing back to the Mary Kate and Ashley movie when they are at summer camp and Kirstie Alley gets completely obliterated by Mac and Cheese in a food fight. Our music begins with an aggressive yet somehow playful guitar. The laughter of Zico during this intro ads a layer of cockiness in the overall tone. "Very Good" as a whole has a fun bad boy swagger to it. It's the kind of song that would change the way you walk as you listen to it, feeling like a whole badass in the process. The mixture of the heavy guitar elements with the hip-hop and pop elements works incredibly well and is well balanced. The melody of the vocals is catchy, however, the rap verses are the true stars of the show here.

Lyrically "Very Good" amplifies the cool swagger in a boastful manner. At the same time it definitely serves as a diss track to their competitors.

"King of the jungle,
Hey kids, stop your cute baby show
The atmosphere is already ripe
and I conquer the audience in a moment
Roll out the carpet, get ready to be hoisted in the air
The bursting pop bottle, get ready for the last spur
How many fake MCs out there"

I interpret "cute baby show" to be about the Korean aegyo. Aegyo is essentially a cutesy act that a lot of idols do as an act of fan service. It is kind of like baby talking.

"Aight
The seven villains who recklessly run
Can't block us with a red light
Everyone below me, pay attention
Let out a big shout on the front line
Hey you, stop pretending like you're all that
Put your hands up, you need to be punished
We unite like we've become one"

"Bees, buzz louder, buzz buzz
Scream till the stage falls down
Flower boys try so hard
They try to be hard but they're so cute
Make some trouble, it's five minutes before chaos
We're pros when it comes to concepts like this, leggo"

Again very pointed digs at the cutesy idol culture and deliberately separating themselves from that image. Block B is declaring themselves to be the real bad boys of the scene, calling themselves villains even. Proclaiming they are the real deal and not wannabes.

Lyric that attacked me:
"Lift your thumbs, burn your passion
Gather here like you've gone crazy"

Song Color: Neon Green

Mood: Annoyed
